Do you really know who you’re sending money to?

Australians are losing more and more money to romance scams. In 2015, it was the second highest scam in terms of money reported lost to the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission.

The banking industry has compiled an information sheet to highlight the dangers of online romance scams, how to better identify and avoid these scams, and how banks can help you. It includes some common stories from victims who have been scammed and ways you can protect yourself.

  1. GUARD your personal information and be wary if someone asks for a host of personal details soon after contact, or requests you move off the dating site. If you are unsure, conduct an online search of the person’s name, photo or email address to check for legitimacy.

  2. Be SUSPICIOUS of a person asking for financial assistance – never send money without knowing for sure you can trust the person you are communicating with.

  3. Before sending any money always TALK to a friend or relative and seek advice about the relationship that you have formed online.

  4. CONTACT your bank IMMEDIATELY if you think you have provided confidential banking details to a scammer.

  5. If you believe you have been a victim of a romance scam, REPORT it to the Australian Cybercrime Online Reporting Network (ACORN).
