Australian Data Strategy

The Australian Banking Association (ABA) welcomes the development of a unified strategy around the use of public and private data to drive economic, health and social outcomes. We are optimistic that all Australians will benefit from a coordinated government approach. ABA members encourage government to streamline their collection of data from banks, and encourage government to work with industry when developing future policies around data security and privacy and governance related to Artificial Intelligence.

The ABA strongly supports the Government’s desire to build on rather than duplicate existing regulation. A harmonised approach is critical to the implementation of these reforms in the banking industry. A single regulator having a clear mandate and a transparent system in place for regulatory co-ordination for banks - a model that may be relevant for other parts of the banking and financial services sector and other sectors.

The ABA recommends that the draft legislative instrument be amended so that a ‘small ADI’ would be defined as having less than or equal to $30 billion total resident assets rather than the current definition of having less than or equal to $10 billion total resident assets (on a three-year average).
