Banks urge Aussies to stay Census safe as scammers look to cash in

Australian banks are warning households to be on the look-out for Census related scams as criminals look to get their hands on personal and financial information. 

Key tips for staying Census safe: 

• Never click a link in a text or email claiming to be from the ABS.
• Double check you are on the official Census website before proceeding.
• Remember, the ABS will never ask for banking details such as login details or any kind of payment.
• If you’re unsure about any Census communications, visit the official ABS website to contact them directly.
• If you think you’ve provided information to a scammer, contact your bank immediately.

ABA CEO Simon Birmingham said banks were on high alert for scams as criminals look to cash in on this week’s Census.

“The Census is a significant event impacting millions of Australians and criminals will be looking to get a pay day out of it,” Mr Birmingham said.

“While this is an important information gathering event that everyone should play their part in, please make sure that you aren’t passing personal or financial information straight into the hands of criminals.

“Be on alert for scams impersonating the ABS or Australian Bureau of Statistics. If you are contacted about the Census, take a moment to verify the email, phone call or text.

“Any requests for bank details or credit card information, cash or donations, banking passwords, identity documents or your tax file number should be a major red flag. The ABS and Census would never ask for your banking details or solicit a payment.

“If you think you’ve been tricked or entered your banking details on a fake link, don’t wait, contact your bank straight away. Your bank can act fast to protect your account and help try to get your money back.

“Stay safe this Census week. If something feels off, it pays to stop, check and protect yourself.”
